Immunity

I just finished listening to a thriller entitled “Immunity” by Lori Andrews. It is the first by her I have read and was intrigued by the heroine, a genetic researcher named Alexandra Blake. I know that some stories are far-fetched and one has to suspend belief to enjoy them. Then there is this book. The story is so stupid, the players acting so dumb, I am embarrassed to say I finished it. The only reason I did was the premise was good. When it turned out not to be a new disease but merely a chemical induced syndrome, I was even more disappointed. Sorry Lori but I won’t be reading any more of your novels.

To The Death

Recently finished listening to the Patrick Robinson novel “To The Death”. This one is the story of the desire for the C-n-C of Hamas to assassinate Admiral Arnold Morgan (and those who have at least a couple of Robinson’s previous novels know Morgan), former National Security Adviser and still advising the president on such matters. While not as good as some of his previous books, this one still held my attention and had me listening after I had finished shaving, etc. in the morning, which is when I listen to books. Some other characters from previous novels are in this one too, such as Rick Hunter, former Navy SEAL and defected SAS colonel. I recommend listening/reading Robinson’s novels in the order they were written. The first was “Kilo Class” and is a real good thriller, especially if you are interested in submarine activities.

The Full Cupboard Of Life

I finished listening to the unabridged version of ”The Full Cupboard of Life” by Alexander McCall Smith this past week. This is the fifth book in a series about the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency of Botswana Africa. The head of this agency is Mma Ramotswe, a traditional and traditionally built woman living in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. This series is outstanding. The stories are not so much about the cases solved but about life and culture in this African nation. Full of rich characters, like Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni who runs the best automobile repair shop in Botswana, to Mma Makutsi, assistant detective and secretary (who by the way scored 97% on the final examination at the Botswana Secretarial School), to Mma Potokwani, who runs the orphan farm outside of Gabarone. If you have not yet begun reading this series, you should rush to your local library or book store and pick up the first book in the series!

Halloween 2007

Last night I watched the new Rob Zombie version of Halloween. It was as expected from Rob Zombie. Dark, dreary, and full of odd people. Some changes to the original story were made and the length was increased by 30 minutes to a full two hours. Part of this was due to a significantly longer Michael as a youngster and some explanation as to why he did what he did. This sequence was, as it turns out, the best part of the movie. The telling of the return lacked the style and suspense of the John Carpenter original. There were a couple of interesting plot twists not in the original that kept your interest but they were not enough to save the film from being a disappointment.
